About Mike

Mike brings nearly two decades of hands-on experience in local food production and farmer education. As executive director of Seed Savers Exchange, he leads an organization dedicated to preserving agricultural diversity and building seed resilience across the country. Beyond his advocacy work, Mike is also co-owner of River Root Farm in Decorah, Iowa—a certified organic vegetable farm and greenhouse operation where he puts his values into practice every growing season.

What sets Mike apart is his deep commitment to both the practical and systemic sides of sustainable growing. He understands the ins-and-outs of crop selection and plant production, but he's also dedicated years to supporting the development of resilient food systems, working with organizations and businesses across the nation. His belief in servant-based leadership and collaborative work environments shines through in everything he does, whether sharing farming knowledge or building stronger agricultural communities.
